Calonge and Sant Antoni de Calonge belong to the same municipality, yet staying in one or the other creates a noticeably different holiday. Calonge sits inland around its historic centre, vineyards and residential hills, while Sant Antoni stretches along the sea with a broad beach and promenade. The drive between them is short, so wherever you stay you can enjoy both. The real question is not access to the beach. It is whether you want the sea outside your door or prefer more space and a quieter villa setting at the end of the day.
Choose Calonge when the house is part of the holiday
Calonge tends to suit travellers who want a detached home, garden, terrace and private pool to matter just as much as the destination. Residential areas spread through the greener hills around the old village, so evenings are quieter and there is often more space around the property. A car is useful because you will normally drive to the beach, shops or dinner, but the distances are small. The reward is returning after a busy coastal morning to a setting that feels removed from the promenade. Our guide to things to do in Calonge shows why the inland side deserves attention too.
Choose Sant Antoni when the beach should organise the day
Sant Antoni is almost the opposite. The long beach and flat promenade make it easy to build the day around the sea without constant car journeys. You can walk for coffee, swim, return for lunch and go back out again in the evening. Torre Valentina marks the western end where the coastline becomes rockier and the Camí de Ronda begins to feel more adventurous. Families with young children often appreciate the straightforward beach routine, while couples may simply like being able to leave the car after dinner.
With children, think about the hours between the activities
Both places work for families, but in different ways. In Sant Antoni the practical advantage is obvious: beach, promenade, ice cream and dinner can happen on foot. In Calonge, the advantage appears during the hottest hours, when a private pool and garden can become the main plan instead of keeping everybody on the beach. Younger children may benefit from that quieter rhythm, especially during July and August. Our Sant Antoni with children guide goes deeper into the beachfront option if family logistics are the deciding factor.
Evenings reveal the difference better than beach photos do
Imagine coming home at six in the evening. In Sant Antoni you may still be on the promenade, watching the beach empty slowly and deciding where to eat. In Calonge you may already be beside your own pool, showered and deciding whether to stay in or drive out later. Neither is better. They simply create a different feeling after the main activity of the day has finished. For travellers who enjoy nightlife and shops, Sant Antoni also has Palamós nearby; Calonge works better for people who value privacy and are comfortable using the car.
For a beach-first holiday where walking to the sea is part of the picture, we would choose Sant Antoni. For a villa holiday with a pool, relaxed afternoons and different coastal towns on different days, we would choose Calonge. The good news is that the choice is not restrictive: the two are so close that you can have breakfast in the old village and swim at Sant Antoni before lunch. If you are still comparing bases across the wider area, our Palamós, Sant Antoni or Platja d’Aro comparison adds two more useful perspectives.
