Santa Cristina d’Aro is unusually well placed for day trips because several completely different directions begin almost at the door. Girona gives you a city day inland, Romanyà de la Selva and Les Gavarres offer green scenery close to home, Sant Feliu and S’Agaró work for easy half-days, and farther north the medieval villages and Begur can fill a longer outing. South-west, the road towards Tossa de Mar becomes one of the more dramatic coastal drives in the area. The best approach is not to combine everything, but to give each direction enough time to develop its own mood.
Girona for the day when everybody wants a city
Girona is close enough to feel straightforward but different enough from Santa Cristina to reset the holiday. Walk the city walls, explore the historic centre and Jewish Quarter, then stay for lunch instead of treating the visit as a photo stop. We would keep the programme relatively open so there is time to sit somewhere and browse rather than moving constantly. Returning to a quiet villa and pool afterwards is part of what makes the contrast work. A city day feels more enjoyable when it does not require changing hotels or driving several hours.
Romanyà and Les Gavarres for a short inland escape
Some of the best outings barely qualify as day trips. Romanyà de la Selva, the Cova d’en Daina and the wooded surroundings of Les Gavarres are close enough for a morning when the family wants a change from the sea without sacrificing the afternoon. Walk a little, explore the megalithic site and enjoy the greener landscape, then return home for lunch. This is especially attractive in spring, June or September when temperatures are comfortable. Our guide to staying in Santa Cristina explains why the inland side is one of the destination’s strengths.
Sant Feliu and S’Agaró for an easy coastal half-day
Sant Feliu de Guíxols is close enough for a market morning, harbour walk and lunch, while S’Agaró adds an elegant coastal path and Sa Conca nearby. We would combine these when the group wants to leave the villa but not commit to a full day away. Start in Sant Feliu if local town life interests you, or begin at the coast if the walk is the priority. The short return journey means the pool can still be part of the afternoon, which is exactly how we like to use Santa Cristina as a base.
Pals, Peratallada and Begur for a fuller day north
Farther north, the Baix Empordà villages deserve more time. Pals and Peratallada offer stone streets and a slower inland atmosphere, while Begur adds a hilltop centre and attractive coves below. Do not try to fit every village and several beaches into one day. Choose one medieval village, give lunch enough time and add Begur or one cove only if everybody still has energy. The route is particularly rewarding when you allow the landscape between places to be part of the experience rather than rushing from parking space to parking space.
Tossa and the rugged coast when the journey is part of the outing
The road and coastline south-west of Sant Feliu become progressively greener and rockier towards Tossa de Mar. This is the direction to choose when viewpoints, forest and smaller coves matter as much as the final destination. Tossa itself deserves time for the old fortified town, so we would start earlier and avoid stacking too many additional stops. If the real priority is swimming rather than sightseeing, our guide to the best beaches near Santa Cristina offers easier ways to use this same stretch of coast without turning it into a full day trip.
