Santa Cristina d’Aro sits inland, so choosing a beach is part of the day rather than something decided by the address of your accommodation. That is more useful than it sounds. Sant Pol is an easy broad bay close to Sant Feliu, the town beach lets you combine swimming with a real centre, Platja d’Aro adds shops and restaurants, and the road south-west towards Tossa leads to smaller, rougher coastal spots such as Cala Canyet. Instead of repeating one beach all week, you can choose according to wind, children, parking and how much effort the group wants to make that morning.

Sant Pol is the easiest all-round family choice

Sant Pol is the beach we would recommend first when everybody wants a straightforward morning. The bay is broad, attractive and easy to combine with food or a short coastal walk. Families can settle in without carrying everything down a difficult path, and Sant Feliu remains close when somebody wants lunch or a change of scenery. In July and August, arriving earlier makes the experience noticeably calmer. If the children are small or the group simply wants one beach that requires little explanation, Sant Pol is difficult to beat from a Santa Cristina base.

Sant Feliu’s town beach works when beach is only part of the day

The beach in front of Sant Feliu is more urban, but that becomes an advantage when the plan includes the market, Rambla, harbour or lunch. One person can stay by the water while somebody else walks into town, and you do not need to move the car between activities. We would choose it on a day when the family does not want to commit to hours on the sand. Our Sant Feliu beach guide compares this urban option with Sant Pol and the smaller rocky places around the town.

Platja d’Aro is useful when the group wants more than a swim

Platja d’Aro adds a completely different beach day. Platja Gran is wide and central, with shops, restaurants and the town directly behind it. That is useful with teenagers or mixed groups where somebody wants to leave the beach earlier than everybody else. Smaller coves such as Cala Rovira provide a more intimate alternative nearby. We would use Platja d’Aro when the day is meant to include shopping or a lively dinner afterwards, rather than driving there only for the sand.

Cala Canyet is for a rougher piece of coastline

South-west of Sant Feliu, the coastline becomes greener, rockier and less urban as the road heads towards Tossa de Mar. Cala Canyet is one of the places that gives this direction a very different feel from the broad family bays. Access, parking and the character of the shore require more attention, so we would not make it the default choice with very young children or a large amount of beach equipment. For travellers who enjoy smaller coves and a scenic drive, however, it adds exactly the contrast that makes staying inland at Santa Cristina so useful.

Choose the beach after breakfast, not before the holiday

One of the pleasures of Santa Cristina is not needing a permanent ‘local beach’. If the wind is wrong in one direction, choose another. If the children are tired, use Sant Pol. If everyone wants restaurants and shops, go to Platja d’Aro. If adults want a more scenic coast, head towards Cala Canyet. Our guide to staying in Santa Cristina explains why this flexibility is part of the appeal of an inland villa. The short drive to the sea becomes a way to vary the week rather than a disadvantage.
