Sant Antoni de Calonge and Palamós touch the same bay, so choosing between them is not about what you will be able to visit. You will almost certainly spend time in both. The difference is the daily routine outside the headline moments. Sant Antoni puts a long beach and promenade at the centre of the holiday. Palamós combines beach access with a working harbour, market, fishing heritage and a more complete town centre. The best way to choose is to imagine an ordinary day after the novelty has worn off: where do you want to buy breakfast, spend the late afternoon and walk after dinner?
Sant Antoni wins on pure beach convenience
If walking to the sand is the priority, Sant Antoni is difficult to beat. The broad beach runs beside a flat promenade, so coffee, swimming, lunch and an evening stroll can happen without using the car. Torre Valentina at the western end adds a rockier coastline when you want variety. Families with young children often appreciate the straightforward logistics, and couples may simply enjoy leaving the car parked after dinner. Our Sant Antoni with children guide shows how that simplicity works over a full week.
Palamós gives you more layers away from the sand
Palamós feels more like a small town that happens to have excellent beaches. The harbour is still connected to fishing, the Museu de la Pesca adds context, the market and centre are useful on non-beach mornings and La Fosca sits close by when you want a calmer bay. That variety makes Palamós stronger for travellers who become restless if every day revolves around the same promenade. Our things to do in Palamós guide shows how easily harbour, culture, food and coast fit together.
The beach choice is more varied from Palamós
Sant Antoni offers one long easy beach plus the rockier western end. Palamós gives you Platja Gran, La Fosca and the natural coastline towards S’Alguer and Castell. Walkers may therefore prefer Palamós because a beach morning can turn directly into part of the Camí de Ronda. That does not make Sant Antoni less attractive; it simply makes the beach experience more predictable and convenient. If you know you want to explore several coves rather than settle into a regular routine, Palamós has a slight advantage.
Evenings are where the personality difference becomes obvious
In Sant Antoni, the natural evening is a walk along the waterfront, an ice cream and dinner close to the beach. In Palamós, you might start at the harbour, wander through the centre and choose a restaurant based on the mood. Palamós has more fishing-town character, while Sant Antoni feels simpler and more holiday-oriented. Because they are neighbours, you can always borrow the other atmosphere. The question is which one you want outside the door on the evenings when nobody feels like driving anywhere.
With toddlers and a strong preference for walking everywhere, we would lean towards Sant Antoni. For food, town life, coastal walking and a wider choice of beaches, we would lean towards Palamós. Neither is a risky choice because you can move between them in minutes. If the decision still feels too narrow, our Palamós, Sant Antoni or Platja d’Aro comparison adds a livelier third option and makes the wider differences easier to see.
