Santa Cristina d’Aro is a strong family base when the goal is not to be on the beach every minute, but to make the whole holiday easier. Many homes have space, gardens and private pools, while Sant Pol, Sant Feliu and Platja d’Aro remain close enough for short beach outings. That means a family day can have two distinct halves: sea in the morning, home and pool during the heat, then dinner or another small outing later. With young children, that rhythm can be far more relaxing than packing everything for a full day away from the villa.
Make the pool part of the plan, not the fallback
A private pool can be the main reason a family day stays relaxed. Go to Sant Pol early, swim before the beach becomes busier and return to Santa Cristina for lunch. The children can play in the pool while adults stop carrying bags and making decisions for a few hours. In July and August, this break from the midday sun is especially valuable. We would not describe the afternoon at home as missing out. It is often what gives everyone enough energy to go out again later without the day ending in overtired children.
Choose the coast according to the children that morning
Santa Cristina does not lock you into one beach. Sant Pol is an easy family bay, Platja d’Aro gives you sand plus shops and ice cream, and Sant Feliu lets the family combine beach with a real town. On another day you may prefer a smaller rocky stop. Our guide to beaches near Santa Cristina helps match the coast to the age of the children, the wind and how much effort the group wants to make.
Use Romanyà when everybody wants a break from the sea
The inland side provides short outings that feel completely different from the beach. Romanyà de la Selva and the Cova d’en Daina can work with older children who enjoy a little history and exploring without needing a full museum day. Forest roads and the green surroundings also give the family a change of scenery. We would use this on a cooler morning or after several consecutive beach days. The outing can stay short enough that everyone is back at the villa for lunch and the pool.
Sant Feliu and Platja d’Aro are easy evening options
One advantage of Santa Cristina is being able to choose the evening atmosphere. Sant Feliu gives you a harbour, promenade and normal town life; Platja d’Aro has more shops, ice-cream stops and activity that older children may enjoy. Neither requires a long drive. If you are considering whether the family would rather live inside that activity every day, our Santa Cristina or Platja d’Aro comparison explains the trade-off between quiet villa life and having everything outside the door.
We would plan fewer fixed activities in Santa Cristina than in a city break. One substantial outing every other day is enough when beaches, pool and short evening drives already provide variety. Leave room for a late breakfast, a child who suddenly needs a nap or a morning when nobody wants to leave the water. The location is forgiving because changing plans does not mean losing the day. For families who value space and flexibility more than walking to the beach, that is precisely why Santa Cristina can be such a comfortable Costa Brava base.
