Palamós works well with children because you do not have to choose between a real town and easy beach days. La Fosca gives families a straightforward sandy bay, Platja Gran lets you combine swimming with the centre, and the harbour adds something to do when everybody has had enough sun. The best family days here are usually not the ones with the longest activity list. They are the days when beach, food, a little exploring and time back at the holiday home fit together without too many car journeys.
Start with La Fosca when you want an easy morning
La Fosca would be our first recommendation with younger children. The bay feels more manageable than a huge resort beach and there are enough cafés and restaurants nearby to solve the inevitable request for a drink, snack or toilet. Arrive before the strongest heat, stay for a few hours and decide afterwards whether the family still has energy for a short walk towards S’Alguer. If you want to compare La Fosca with Castell and the town beach before choosing, our guide to the best beaches around Palamós is the useful next read.
Use the harbour when everyone needs a change of pace
The fishing harbour is one of the easiest non-beach activities because it does not feel like a formal attraction. Walk along the waterfront, watch the boats and stop near the Museu de la Pesca if the maritime side of Palamós interests the children. Older children often enjoy simply seeing that this is still a working port rather than a decorative marina. We would combine it with an ice cream or an early dinner instead of turning it into a separate sightseeing block. That keeps the day moving without asking tired children to appreciate another monument.
Platja Gran is useful when the family wants different things
The main beach beside town can be surprisingly valuable for families. One parent can stay by the water while somebody else takes a child into the centre, visits the market or picks up forgotten sunscreen. Lunch is easy and the harbour is close enough for an evening walk. It is not the most dramatic beach in the area, but that is not always the point. On a week-long holiday, having one day that requires almost no planning can be more relaxing than finding another hidden cove with a difficult approach.
Save the coastal adventure for the right age and the right weather
With older children, the coast north of La Fosca adds a completely different type of day. S’Alguer and Platja de Castell can be reached on foot and give the outing a sense of adventure without requiring a serious mountain hike. Beyond Castell the path towards Cala Estreta becomes more exposed and less convenient, so we would only continue when everybody genuinely wants to walk. Our Camí de Ronda from Palamós guide explains the sections in more detail. In July and August, early morning is far more comfortable than starting at midday.
Palamós is flexible enough to let a family change plans halfway through the day. A beach morning can end at the pool, a harbour visit can turn into dinner, and a cloudy start can become a walk through town before the sun returns. We would deliberately keep at least one day almost empty. Children rarely follow the holiday schedule adults imagined at home, and Palamós is at its best when you use the short distances to respond to that rather than fighting it. That is also why a spacious holiday home can matter as much as another attraction.
